The Wonderful Dharma Lotus Flower Sutra

The Universal Door Of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva

Nhĩ thời, Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát tức tùng tọa khởi, thiên đản hữu kiên, hiệp chưởng hướng Phật, nhi tác thị ngôn: Thế-Tôn, Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát dĩ hà nhơn duyên danh Quán-thế-âm?

At that time, Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva rose from his seat, uncovered his right shoulder, placed his palms together, and facing the Buddha, said, “World Honored One, for what reason is the Bodhisattva Guanshiyin called ‘Guanshiyin?’”

Phật cáo Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát: Thiện nam tử, nhược hữu vô- lượng bá thiên vạn ức chúng sanh, thọ chư khổ não, văn thị Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát nhứt tâm xưng danh, Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát, tức thời quán kỳ âm thinh giai đắc giải thoát.

The Buddha told Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva, “Good man, if any of the limitless hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis of living beings who are undergoing all kinds of sufferings hear of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva and recite his name single-mindedly, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva will immediately hear their voices and rescue them.”

1. Nhược hữu trì thị Quán-thế-âm Bồ tát danh giả, thiết nhập đại hỏa, hỏa bất năng thiêu; do thị Bồ-tát, oai thần lực cố.

“If a person who upholds the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva enters a great fire, the fire will not burn him, all because of this Bodhisattva’s awesome spiritual power.”

2. Nhược vị đại thủy sở phiêu, xưng kỳ danh hiệu tức đắc thiển xứ.

If a person being tossed about in the great sea calls out the Bodhisattva’s name, he will find a shallow place.”

3. Nhược hữu bá thiên vạn ức chúng sanh, vị cầu: kim ngân, lưu-ly, xa-cừ, mã-não, san-hô, hổ-phách, trân-châu, đẳng bảo, nhập ư đại hải; giả sử hắc phong xuy kỳ thuyền phưởng, phiêu đọa La-sát quỷ quốc, kỳ trung nhược hữu nãi chí nhất nhơn, xưng Quán-thế âm Bồ-tát danh giả, thị chư nhơn đẳng giai đắc giải-thoát La-sát chi nạn. Dĩ thị nhân duyên, danh Quán-thế-âm.

“If the hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis of beings who seek gold, silver, lapis lazuli, mother-of-pearl, carnelian, coral, amber, pearls, and so forth, enter the great sea, an evil wind may toss their boats into the territory of the rakshasa ghosts. But if among them there is even one person who calls out the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, they will all be saved from the difficulty of the rakshasas. For this reason, he is called Guanshiyin.”

4. Nhược phục hữu nhơn, lâm đương  bị hại, xưng Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát danh giả, bỉ sở chấp đao trượng, tầm đoạn đoạn hoại, nhi đắc giải-thoát.

“Further, if a person who is about to be harmed calls out the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, the knives and staves of the attackers will break into pieces and he will be saved.”

5. Nhược tam-thiên đại-thiên quốc độ, mãn trung Dạ-xoa, La-sát, dục lai não nhơn, văn kỳ xưng Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát danh giả, thị chư ác quỷ, thượng bất năng dĩ ác nhãn thị chi, huống phục gia hại.

“If yakshas and rakshasas enough to fill the three thousand great thousand world system come to torment a person, if they hear him call out the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, all those evil ghosts will not even be able to stare at that person with their evil eyes, how much the less harm him.”

6. Thiết phục hữu nhơn, nhược hữu tội, nhược vô tội, nữu giới già tỏa, kiểm hệ kỳ thân, xưng Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát danh giả, giai tất đoạn hoại tức đắc giải thoát.

“If a person, whether guilty or not, who has been put in stocks or bound with chains calls out the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, his fetters will break apart and he will immediately be freed.”

7. Nhược tam-thiên đại-thiên quốc độ, mãn trung oán tặc, hữu nhứt thương chủ, tương chư thương nhơn, tê trì trọng bảo kinh quá hiểm lộ, kỳ trung nhứt nhơn, tác thị xướng ngôn: "Chư thiện-nam tử, vật đắc khủng bố, nhữ đẳng ưng đương nhứt tâm xưng Quán thế-âm Bồ-tát danh hiệu; thị Bồ-tát năng dĩ vô-úy thí ư chúng-sanh; nhữ đẳng nhược xưng danh giả, ư thử oán tặc, đương đắc giải-thoát". Chúng thương nhơn văn, câu phát thinh ngôn: "Nam-mô Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát" xưng kỳ danh cố, tức đắc giải-thoát.

“If bandits enough to fill the three thousand great thousand world system infest a dangerous road on which a merchant chief in charge of costly jewels is leading a group of merchants, but among the merchants there is even a single person who says, ‘Good men, do not be afraid! You should all single-mindedly recite the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva. This Bodhisattva bestows fearlessness upon living beings. If you recite his name, you shall surely be saved from these robbers .’ And if upon hearing that, the merchants all cry out together, ‘Namo Guanshiyin Bodhisattva,’ then they will immediately be saved because they recited his name.”

Vô-tận-ý! Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát ma ha-tát, oai thần chi lực, nguy nguy như thị.

“Inexhaustible Intention! The awesome spiritual power of the Bodhisattva, Mahasattva, Guanshiyin is as lofty and sublime as that!”

Nhược hữu chúng-sanh đa ư dâm dục, thường niệm cung kính Quán-thế âm Bồ-tát tiện đắc ly dục; nhược đa sân nhuế, thường niệm cung kính Quán thế-âm Bồ-tát, tiện đắc ly sân; nhược đa ngu si, thường niệm cung kính Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát tiện đắc ly si.

“If living beings who have much sexual desire constantly and reverently recite the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, they will be separated from desire.” “If those who have much hatred constantly and reverently recite the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, they will be separated from hatred.” “If those who are very stupid constantly and reverently recite the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, they will be separated from stupidity.”

Vô-tận-ý! Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát, hữu như thị đẳng đại oai thần lực, đa sở nhiêu ích. Thị cố chúng-sanh, thường ưng, tâm niệm.

“Inexhaustible Intention, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva has great awesome spiritual powers such as these and confers great benefits. Therefore living beings should always be mindful of him.”

Nhược hữu nữ nhơn, thiết dục cầu nam, lễ bái cúng dường Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát, tiện sanh phước đức trí-huệ chi nam; thiết dục cầu nữ, tiện sanh đoan chánh hữu tướng chi nữ, túc thực đức bổn, chúng nhơn ái kính.

“If women who seek sons bow and make offerings to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, they will give birth to blessed, virtuous and wise sons. If they seek daughters, they will give birth to upright and handsome daughters who have planted roots of virtue in previous lives and who are regarded and respected by all.”

8. Vô-tận-ý! Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát hữu như thị lực, nhược hữu chúng-sanh, cung kính lễ bái Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát, phước bất đường quyên.

“Inexhaustible Intention! Guanshiyin Bodhisattva has powers such as these. If there are living beings who reverently bow to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, they will be blessed and their efforts will not be in vain.”

Thị cố chúng sanh, giai ưng thọ trì Quán-thế-âm Bồ tát danh hiệu.

“Therefore, living beings should all receive and uphold the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva.”

Vô-tận-ý! Nhược hữu nhơn thọ trì lục thập nhị ức hằng-hà sa Bồ-tát danh tự, phục tận hình cúng-dường ẩm thực, y-phục, ngọa-cụ, y-dược, ư nhữ ý vân hà? Thị thiện-nam tử, thiện-nữ nhơn công-đức đa phủ?

“Inexhaustible Intention! If a person were to receive and uphold the names of Bodhisattvas in number as the grains of sand in sixty-two kotis of Ganges Rivers, and in addition were to exhaustively make offerings to them of food, drink, clothing, bedding, and medicine, what do you think: would that good man’s or good woman’s merit and virtue be great or not?”

Vô-tận-ý ngôn: "Thậm đa, Thế Tôn".

Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva replied, “Very great, World Honored One.”

Phật ngôn: "Nhược phục hữu nhơn, thọ trì Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát danh hiệu, nãi chí nhất thời lễ bái, cúng dường, thị nhị nhơn phước, chánh đẳng vô dị! ư bá thiên vạn ức kiếp, bất khả cùng tận.

The Buddha said, “If another person were to receive and uphold the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva and bow and make offerings but once, that person’s blessings would be equal to and no different from the other person’s. They could not be exhausted in hundreds of thousands of myriads of kotis of eons.”

Vô-tận-ý, thọ trì Quán-thế âm Bồ-tát danh hiệu, đắc như thị vô lượng vô biên phước đức chi lợi".

“Inexhaustible Intention, one who receives and upholds the name of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva obtains the benefit of blessings and virtues as limitless and boundless as those.”

Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát bạch Phật ngôn: Thế-Tôn, Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát, vân hà du thử Ta-bà thế giới? Vân-hà nhi vị chúng-sanh thuyết-pháp? Phương-tiện chi lực, kỳ sự vân hà?

Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva said to the Buddha, “World Honored One, how does Guanshiyin Bodhisattva roam through this Saha world? How does he speak the Dharma for living beings? How does he carry out this work with the power of expedients?”

9. Phật cáo Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát: "Thiện nam tử, nhược hữu quốc độ chúng sanh, ưng dĩ Phật thân đắc độ giả, Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát tức hiện Phật thân nhi vị thuyết-pháp.

Vô-tận-ý! Thị Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát thành tựu như thị công-đức dĩ chủng chủng hình, du chư quốc độ, độ thoát chúng-sanh.

“Inexhaustible Intention! Guanshiyin Bodhisattva has accomplished merit and virtue such as this and, in all manner of forms, roams throughout the land, saving and liberating living beings.”

Thị cố nhữ đẳng, ưng đương nhứt tâm cúng-dường Quán-thế âm Bồ-tát. Thị Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát ma-ha-tát, ư bố úy cấp nạn chi trung, năng thí vô-úy; thị cố thử Ta-bà thế giới, giai hiệu chi vi thí vô-úy giả.

“Therefore you should all single-mindedly make offerings to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva. Guanshiyin Bodhisattva Mahasattva can, in the midst of fear, crisis, and hardship, bestow fearlessness. That is why in this Saha world, all call him the “Bestower of Fearlessness.”

Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát bạch Phật ngôn: "Thế-Tôn! Ngã kim đương cúng dường Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát ". Tức giải cảnh chúng bảo châu anh-lạc, giá trị bá thiên lượng kim, nhi dĩ dữ chi, tác thị ngôn: "Nhơn giả thọ thử pháp thí, trân bảo anh-lạc".

Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva said to the Buddha, “World Honored One, I shall now make an offering to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva.” He then removed his necklace of pearls, its value in the hundreds of thousands of ounces of gold, and offered it to the Bodhisattva, saying, “Humane One, accept this Dharma offering, this necklace of precious pearls.”

Thời Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát bất khẳng thọ chi.

Guanshiyin Bodhisattva refused to accept it.

Vô-tận-ý phục bạch Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát ngôn: "Nhơn giả

mẫn ngã đẳng cố, thọ thử anh-lạc".

Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva again said to Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, “Humane One, out of pity for us, accept this necklace.”

Nhĩ thời Phật cáo Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát: "Ðương mẫn thử Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát cập tứ-chúng: Thiên, Long, Dạ-xoa, Càn thát-bà, A-tu-la, Ca-lâu-la, Khẩn-na-la, Ma-hầu-la-già, Nhơn, Phi-nhơn đẳng cố, thọ thử anh-lạc".

The Buddha then told Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, “You should take pity on Inexhaustible Intention Bodhisattva, the four-fold assembly, as well as the gods, dragons, yakshas, gandharvas, asuras, garudas, kinnaras, mahoragas, humans, non-humans, and so forth, and accept this necklace.”

Tức thời Quán thế-âm Bồ-tát, mẫn chư tứ chúng, cập ư Thiên, Long, Nhơn, Phi-Nhơn đẳng, thọ kỳ anh-lạc, phân tác nhị phần: Nhất phần phụng Thích-Ca Mâu-Ni Phật, nhất phần phụng Ða-bảo Phật tháp.

Then, out of pity for the four-fold assembly, the gods, dragons, humans, non-humans, and so forth, Guanshiyin Bodhisattva accepted the necklace. He divided it into two parts: one part he offered to Shakyamuni Buddha and the other to the Stupa of Many Jewels Buddha.

Vô-tận-ý, Quán-thế-âm Bồ-tát hữu như thị tự-tại thần lực du ư Ta-bà thế giới.

“Inexhaustible Intention, such is the self-mastery and spiritual power of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, who roams throughout the Saha world.”

Nhĩ thời Vô-tận-ý Bồ-tát dĩ kệ vấn viết:

At that time the Bodhisattva Guardian of the Earth rose from his seat and said to the Buddha, “World Honored One, if there are those who hear this chapter of Guanshiyin Bodhisattva, who learn about the self-mastery of his deeds and the power of his spiritual penetrations as shown in this Universal Door, you should know that the merit and virtue of such people will not be small.”

When Avalokiteshvara Bodhisattva was practicing the profound prajna paramita, he illuminated the five skandhas and saw that they are all empty, and he crossed  beyond all suffering and difficulty.

Shariputra, form does not differ from emptiness;  emptiness does not differ from form. Form itself is emptiness; emptiness itself is form. So, too, are feeling, cognition, formation, and consciousness.

Shariputra, all dharmas are empty of characteristics.  They are not produced. Not destroyed, not defiled, not  pure, and they neither increase nor diminish.

Therefore, in emptiness there is no form, feeling, cognition,  formation, or consciousness; no eyes, ears, nose, tongue,  body, or mind; no sights, sounds, smells, tastes, objects of  touch, or dharmas; no field of the eyes, up to and  including no field of mind-consciousness; and no  ignorance or ending of ignorance, up to and including no  old age and death or ending of old age and death. There is no suffering, no accumulating, no extinction, no way, and no understanding and no attaining.

Because nothing is attained, the Bodhisattva, through  reliance on prajna paramita, is unimpeded in his mind.  Because there is no impediment, he is not afraid, and he leaves distorted dream-thinking far behind. Ultimately Nirvana!

All Buddhas of the three periods of time attain  Anuttarasamyaksambodhi through reliance on prajna  paramita.

LƯU THÔNG

C tri Bát-nhã Ba-la-mt-đa, th đi thn chú, th đi minh chú, th vô thượng chú, th vô đng đng chú, năng tr nht thiết kh, chơn thit bt hư.

Therefore, know that prajna paramita is a  great spiritual mantra, a great bright mantra, a supreme  mantra, an unequalled mantra. It can remove all  suffering; it is genuine and not false. That is why the  mantra of prajna paramita was spoken. Recite it like this:

Gate gate paragate parasamgate bodhi svaha!

Guan Yin Praise

Bodhisattva Guan Yin is wonderful past gratitude,

Pure and clear are her adornments, gained through practice ages long,

Sea-vast a red lotus flower fragrant rests beneath her foot,

Bay-curve of an autum moon is in the crescent of her brows,

Every where and constantly, sweet dew sprinkles from her vase,

In her hand, the willow branch, through the countless autumn,

Prayers depart a thousand hearts, in a thousand hearts she answers,

Sailing the sea of suffering, crossing people over.

Na Mo Greatly Kind and Compassionate Bodhisattva of The Crystal Land, Who Dwells on Potola Mountain and Observes The Sounds of The World.

Verse for Transferring the Merit

We vow that merit made from this deed will become,

Adornments for the Pure Lands of Buddhas,

Repaying the four kinds of kindness above,

And helping all beings in Three Paths below.

May those who have seen and heard what was done,

All make the great resolve for Bodhi,

And when our retribution is over let us go,

To rebirth in the Land of Ultimate Bliss.
